Police operatives from the Commissioner of Police Special Squad, Lagos State Command, have arraigned leader of a criminal gang, who allegedly conspired to loot, carted away AK-47 rifles and other weapons and set Ikotun Police Station ablaze during the EndSARS protest in Lagos.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the suspect, Wasiu Jaiyeola and his gang, apart from carting away arms, magazines and ammunition, they also looted all exhibits at the station and escaped during the said period.
This was disclosed after he was arrested and interrogated at the Police Command headquarters at Ikeja, Lagos and he reportedly confessed his involvement in the looting at the Station.
He was charged before the Ogba Magistrates Court for arson, looting and conspiracy.
According to the Police, Jaiyeola conspired with others already charged before Court and some at large and allegedly committed the act before he was later arrested by the Police.
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Supol Ezekiel Ayorinde, asked the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for advice to determine jurisdiction of the matter.
Hence, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, ordered his remand in correctional centre without an option of bail pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice.
The Court also directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send to the DPP for advice. The defendant will be in custody pending when the DPP’s report will be ready in order to determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not.
According to Police sources, the defendant will likely spend the rest of his life in prison custody due to the seriousness of the alleged offence he committed. But that will be when he is tried and found guilty before the Court for the alleged offence.
