A man, Benedict Anieze, is in Police net after he reportedly smashed the skull of his one-month old baby on the ground in Lagos State. The baby was said to have died on the spot and having realized what he had done, he set his apartment on fire in order to cover the crime as he pretended to be possessed by evil spirits.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on Sunday 3rd April, 2022, at Pipeline area of Idimu, Lagos State, where he resides with his family.
After his arrest, he was detained at the Idimu Division, where he was said to be undergoing interrogation over his dastardly act.
According to their neighbours, on that fateful day, the suspect, Benedict, was said to have been at home with his wife and their baby when he suddenly went berserk. He forcefully carried their child, smashed her on the ground, the skull broke into pieces and the baby died instantly.
“Having realized what he had done and to cover up his evil act, the man, Benedict allegedly set his house on fire before taking to his heels and escaped ” their neighbour stated.
The suspect was later arrested and transferred to the SCID Yaba, Lagos, for further investigation over the alleged murder and arson, which attracts several years of imprisonment if he is tried and found guilty before the Court.
This has been confirmed by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who said that the suspect is now in Police custody undergoing interrogation over his conduct.
He explained that Police operatives alongside neighbours tracked down the suspect to a location in the area, where he was eventually arrested.
“There was no argument between him and his wife. He said he was possessed by evil spirits when he smashed the baby on the ground. He also set the house ablaze and ran away.The wife cried out and after putting out the fire, they brought her to the Police Station. The Police alongside neighbours tracked him down to the place where he was arrested” the Police Spokesman said.
The corpse of the baby has been deposited at the Yaba General Hospital’s morgue.
SP Hundeyin stated that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.
