CYRIACUS IZUEKWE

A 37-year old woman,  Mrs. Kafayat Saka has landed in trouble in Lagos State after she went to the Police and stood as surety for her husband, Jamiu Saka over the alleged rape of a 14-year old girl and he ran away having been released from custody.

P. M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at the Gender Section of the Lagos State Command, Ikeja, where Jamiu was detained for interrogation over the act.

The Police alleged the suspect, Jamiu, to have engaged the minor in sex and he was caught before he was arrested and transferred to the Gender Section for interrogation.

While at the Command, he reportedly denied of having sex with  the girl and the wife believed him. The wife then went to the Command and stood as surety for him with N500,000 as bond.He was released to her on the condition that she will bring him  anytime the Police wanted him for prosecution and they went home.

However, after Jamiu was released from custody, he sensed that he will spend many years in prison if he faces trial before the Court and may likely be convicted because of the weight of evidence with the Police.
He reportedly packed some of his property and ran away to an unknown place without informing his wife. He later informed her that he ran away to avoid going to prison if he is charged before the Court.

Later, the Police asked his wife, Kafayat, to produce her husband  as she promised and she told the Police that he ran away after his release from custody and she was not able to trace him.
She was then arrested and subsequently arraigned before the Ogba Magistrates Court to show cause she will not forfeit the  the N500,000 bond she stood for her husband.
She pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Supol Benson Emerhi, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing to enable the Police to prove that she actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. M. A. Adegbaye, granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.

However, she was remanded in custody pending when she will perfect her bail conditions while the matter was adjourned till 4th April, 2022, for mention.
