A 20-year old man, Ayomide John, who was caught inside a church in the early hours of the morning, has told the Court that he went to the church to steal before he was caught and handed over to the Police in Lagos.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the suspect, John, was caught inside the Celestial Church of Christ, located at Igando/Ikotun Road Igando, Lagos, while he was attempting to steal.
He was apprehended by the owner of the church and handed over to the Police at Igando Division for interrogation over his conduct.
The suspect reportedly told the Police that he actually sneaked into the church at about 2am to steal but did not know that the owner of the church will still be awake by that time and was caught.
He further explained to the Police that Christmas was then fast approaching and he had no money to celebrate it and so he decided to go to the Church on 18th December, 2021, to steal and was unfortunate that before he could steal anything there, the son of the owner of the church raised alarm and he was caught in the process.
After thorough interrogation, the Police found him culpable and subsequently charged him before the Ejigbo Magistrates Court for attempted stealing.
When he was arraigned, he pleaded guilty and later pleaded for leniency.
The prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan, presented the facts and asked the Court to sentence him accordingly to serve as deterrent to others who may not want to try such in future.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. E.O. Ogunkanmi, found him guilty as charged and sentenced him to one month community service to serve as deterrent to others.
