Political stakeholders in Idemmili South Local Government Area of Anambra State are protesting the dominance of Awka Etiti indigenes in the administration of the Local Council.

The stakeholders and community groups argue that Idemmili South comprises of Akwu-Ukwu, Alor, Awka-Etiti, Ojoto, Nnokwa, Oba, and Nnobi, yet “Awka Etiti” alone has monopolized the Chairmanship position for uninterrupted eight-year period, contravening democratic principles and zoning arrangements.

According to them, Hon. Don Unachukwu, from Awka-Etiti, served as Transition Chairman of Idemmili South from 2016 to 2022, before Hon. Amaka Obi, who hails from the same Awka-Etiti, assumed office in 2022.

The reshuffle in Local Government leadership by the Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is expected to uphold equity and fairness in Idemmili South and accommodate other communities in the Local Government area.

However, Hon. Amaka Obi’s apparent desire to continue against the popular wish of both stakeholders and the people is viewed as detrimental to APGA’s interests.

Following information that the current Council Boss, Hon. Amaka Obi, wants to continue and not hand over to another individual from a different community, there has been widespread protests over the continued monopoly by Awka Etiti indigenes. Youths were said to have threatened to disrupt operations at the Local Government headquarters if the ruling party, APGA, in collaboration with a select few, persist with the Awka-Etiti agenda.

The stakeholders are advocating for power-sharing among other communities to ensure equity and fairness, while reaffirming their unwavering support for Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo and his party, APGA.

The protesting stakeholders also claimed that the current Council boss, Hon. Amaka Obi, with her style of leadership has failed to attract new members to APGA. They insisted that perpetuating the Awka-Etiti agenda is seen as a regressive one for Idemmili South.
