Igbo Speaking Community Lagos State has banned all Ndieze crowned by the community from using His Royal Highnes and His Royal Majesty title in the State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that it was contained in the press release signed by the Chairman of Board of Trustees (BOT), Dr Jonathan Nnaji and President General of the community, Chief Sunday Udeh respectively.
The statement read:
“FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIRMAN AND PRESIDENT OF THE IGBO SPEAKING COMMUNITY IN LAGOS
TO ALL MEMBERS AND STAKEHOLDERS
“It has come to the attention of the Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos that some of our esteemed members, honoured with the title of EZE NDIGBO in various parts of Lagos, have been contravening the objectives and provisions of our community’s constitution. Our community’s primary objective is to preserve our culture and traditions, promote peaceful coexistence with our host community, and respect the laws and customs of Lagos State.”
“In light of this, an emergency meeting was convened by the Board of Trustees and leadership of the Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos, and the following resolutions were unanimously adopted:
1. Abrogation of “Royal Highness” or “Royal Majesty” Title: All EZE NDIGBO under the Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos are hereby advised to desist from using the prefix “Royal Highness” or “Royal Majesty” to their titles, forthwith. The correct and recognized title shall be “EZE NDIGBO”.
2. Consequences of Misrepresentation: Any EZE NDIGBO who continues to use the title “Royal Highness” or “Royal Majesty” shall be deemed to be acting contrary to the provisions of our community’s constitution, and the Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos shall not be held liable for any consequences arising therefrom.
3. Non-Recognition of “Obi of Lagos” Title: We wish to inform the general public that there is no provision in our community’s constitution for the title “Obi of Lagos”. Any individual who claims to hold such a title does so without the authority or recognition of the Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos, and shall be solely responsible for any consequences arising therefrom.
ADVISORY TO IGBO RESIDENTS IN LAGOS
We urge all Igbos resident in Lagos to continue to live in peace and harmony with our host community and other ethnic groups. We also advise our people to exercise caution when purchasing properties or lands in Lagos by verifying the authenticity of ownership and ensuring compliance with the laws of Lagos State. This is to avoid potential losses arising from demolition of properties after investment.
