IGP Swimmers Make History As Overall Champions Of 10th Chief Of Naval Staff Swimming Championship

In the early hours of 12th December 2022, the Nigeria Police Force Swimming Team also renowned as the IGP SWIMMERS, stormed the Stephen Keshi Township Stadium Swimming Pool – Venue of the 10th CNS Swimming Championship, to ensure full representation of the Force at the prestigious event.

The IGP Swimmers were led by ACP Shuaibu Bello – Caretaker Chairman Police Swimming Association, and he was assisted by SP Thomas Ilegogie – Head Coach of the Team. The Athletes were 8 in number, including Sgt. Yellow Yeiyah, Sgt Epesanmi Woniebi, recent African Champion and World Finalist PC Collins Obi and his sister W/PC Oluchi Obi, W/PC Oka Eworo another World Finalist – Budapest 2022. Amazingly two newly discovered talents at the 13th Biennial Police Games – Uyo 2022, made the cut for the team to Asaba. They are PCs Benson Philip and Ikuboburu Taru of Delta and Ondo State Commands.

The 10th CNS Swimming Chamoionship featured participation from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy (Hosts), Nigeria Securities and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Fire Service (FFS), Delta, Bayelsa and Ondo States, and Jimi Oshinowo Swimming Club among others.

It could be recalled that the IGP Swimmers had finished closely behind Team Delta in the 8th and 9th editions of the Championship. However in this year 2022 edition, at the end of 3 intensive days of stormy water battles, the IGP Swimmers showed super class, sweeping in 13 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze Medals to emerge OVERALL CHAMPIONS of the 10TH CNS SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP – ASABA 2022.

In the process of emerging Overall Champions, PC Collins Obi and W/PC Oka Eworo both showed the dexterous stuff they are made of as they were awarded trophies as the MOST VALUABLE MALE AND FEMALE SWIMMERS of the Championship, haven won 4 Gold Medals each. The Caretaker Chairman of the Police Swimming Association – ACP Bello was awarded and decorated with a Gold Medal for his tremendous contributions to the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF).

By the grace of the Almighty God, no ugly incidents, accidents or casualties were recorded, while the Police Team were commended and applauded for the high level of discipline, competence and professionalism they exhibited.
