Ikeja Local Govt Takes Campaign Against Domestic Violence To The Streets

Ikeja Local Government has intensified its fight against domestic violence with a sensitisation walk organised by the Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, WAPA, Department.

 

The exercise commenced at the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat and proceeded to the Ikeja Under-Bridge, where council officials, community members and other stakeholders engaged residents and passers-by on the dangers of domestic violence and the need for peaceful and respectful homes.

Leading the walk on behalf of the Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda, AKOD, were the Supervisor for WAPA, Hon. Queen Akinduro Oluwafunmibi; the Special Adviser on WAPA, Hon. Olajumoke Ogunyemi; and the Head of Department, WAPA, Mrs. Tolulope Akingbesote, alongside other council officials and community stakeholders.

 

Participants carried placards with messages such as “Say No to Domestic Violence” and “Ikeja Says No to Domestic Violence” to draw public attention to the need to speak up against all forms of abuse.

Speaking during the rally, Hon. Oluwafunmibi said the exercise reflected the administration’s commitment to peace, unity and the protection of women, children and families.

 

“We want peace and unity in Ikeja. We detest every form of violence. Our Chairman, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda, believes strongly in peace and works tirelessly to ensure that residents continue to enjoy peace and harmony in Ikeja,” she said.

Mrs. Akingbesote noted that domestic violence extends beyond physical assault to include emotional, verbal and psychological abuse, which can have lasting effects on individuals and families.

She encouraged persons experiencing sexual and gender-based violence to seek assistance through appropriate channels, including the Mediation Centre within Ikeja Local Government, where support and guidance are available.

The sensitisation walk also urged residents to embrace healthy communication, mutual respect and peaceful conflict resolution. Victims, witnesses and members of the public were advised to report cases of abuse promptly and seek help.

Ikeja Local Government reaffirmed its commitment to building a safer community where residents can live free from violence, intimidation and abuse.
