The Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Hon. Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), has reiterated his administration’s commitment to environmental cleanliness and public health through continuous sanitation exercises across Ikeja and its environs.

Speaking during another environmental sanitation and inspection exercise carried out on Thursday, 14th May, 2026, along Awolowo Way, Ikeja, Comrade Dauda emphasized the need for all residents and property owners to take responsibility for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

During the exercise, the Chairman inspected an open land along Awolowo Way, whose occupiers had allegedly failed to maintain the property despite several notices served by the local government authorities.

According to the Council boss, Comrade Dauda, the local government has taken necessary administrative steps regarding the property and appropriate levies would also be enforced in accordance with environmental regulations.

“There is no challenge at all, as it is part of our agenda to make sure we have a clean environment and Ikeja must be clean. We must live in an environment where our children will be proud of us,” he stated.

The Chairman further noted that the sanitation drive aligns with the developmental vision of the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, towards building a safer and healthier Lagos.

“All we are doing is to ensure that we have an environment that is safe for all of us. We all dream of a better Lagos, and if we can sustain this culture of cleanliness, we will achieve a healthier and more beautiful society,” AKOD added.

He called on residents of Ikeja and Lagosians generally to support the local government’s environmental sanitation initiatives by actively participating in weekly and monthly clean-up exercises.

“My advice to Lagosians, especially the people of Ikeja, is to join hands with the local government. Every Thursday and the last Saturday of every month should be dedicated to cleaning our homes and environment because sanitation goes beyond cleanliness; it also protects our health,” he said.

Chairman AKOD also warned against the dangers of open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse in public places, stressing that environmental responsibility remains a collective duty.

He disclosed that the Ikeja Local Government would soon commence enforcement of its environmental bye-law initiative tagged “ESO IKEJA” after extensive public sensitization and awareness campaigns.

“We are creating awareness and sensitization on the penalties and implications of indiscriminate waste disposal. Very soon, enforcement will begin against offenders who dump refuse indiscriminately,” he warned.

Joining the Chairman during the sanitation exercise were officials of the Department of Environment and Sanitation of Ikeja Local Government, led by the Head of Department.
