The Senator representing Cross River Central Senatorial District, Prof Sandy Onor says if elected as governor, he would revamp the state civil service, restore the full autonomy of the local government, restore the tourism glories of the state, provide security and a new lease of life for the people of the State.

Onor, who has declared his interest to run for the governorship seat in the state in 2023, stated this during a press briefing at the NUJ secretariat in Calabar.

According to him, “I have worked with the two past governors who made us proud as a people. Mr Donald Duke laid the foundation, Senator Liyel Imoke built on it and also carved a niche for himself in the area of rural development. I am determined to follow their footsteps and strive to surpass their achievements.”

He also said cowards are promoting zoning in the 2023 election in the state.

“Those who are promoting and spreading the message of zoning are either cowards who do not have what it takes to contest the party’s ticket under a free and fair process, or are ethnic jingoists who are only interested in misleading our people in pursuit of their very personal and selfish interests.

“Zoning has never been practiced in our state since the advent of the current democratic experience in 1999. We cannot afford to sacrifice competence on the altar of zoning, as we prepare to choose a candidate for the governorship or any other election,” he said.

Onor further stated that nobody or group of persons should divide the state and its people in the name of zoning, adding that during his consultations with PDP stakeholders, “leaders of our party were united in their resolution that the contest is open for anybody who thinks he has what it takes to contest, no matter what part of the state the person comes from. The leaders were firm on this, as reflected in the communique they issued.”

He said those saying he was being sponsored by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State were intellectually lazy, adding that “I am proud of my relationship with Wike. If you want to be governor, you must have support from outside. On my own I have the quality.”
