The State Organizing Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and former Commissioner of Science and Technology in Imo State, Hon. Ikechukwu Umeh, allegedly escaped an assassination attempt by suspected hired political assassins.
The incident occurred at the premises of a popular hotel in Owerri, the state capital, according to the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Hon. Cajetan Duke. Hon. Umeh was said to have come for a meeting and was trailed to the venue by the suspected gunmen.
But for the vigilance and swift response of the internal security guards on duty, who raised alarm on the suspicious moves of the gunmen, who came in a white Toyota Corolla vehicle, they would have unleashed a second attempt on the life of Hon. Umeh within the period of the 2023 electioneering activities.
It will be recalled that Umeh sometime last year survived a gun shot by unknown gunmen. The party therefore, called on relevant security agencies in the state to investigate what it described as an organized attempt to intimidate and clamp down on strategic leaders and officers of the ruling APC.
According to the APC, “Our attention has been drawn to another assassination attempt on the life of our State Organizing Secretary of our party, Chief Ikechukwu Umeh, by suspected political sponsored gunmen, who trailed him to a venue of meeting in Owerri”.
“Earlier before this incident, we have alerted the public and the security agencies of continuous threat to members of the state working committee of our party by unknown persons.”
“While we commit ourselves to issue based and violent free political process, we appeal to opposition political actors in the state to embrace politics of conversation instead of crude politics of violence, intimidation and harassment.”
