In what could be described as a record breaking in Africa, a 67-year old Nigerian woman, Mrs Ajibola Otunbusin has been delivered of a bouncing baby boy in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
According to a report by Lagos Times, an online newspaper, the sexagenarian woman and her husband, Professor Samuel Olu Otunbusin, were said to be overjoyed after their baby boy was delivered at Atoke Medical Centre, Abeokuta on Saturday October 20.
The elated mother thus broke all records not only as the oldest Nigerian woman to give birth through IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization), she also the oldest African in recorded history to give birth to a baby, and becoming the second oldest mum in the world.
Mrs. Otunbusin was said to have undergone the IVF procedure at the St Ives IVF & Fertility Center.
With her successful conception and delivery, she becomes the latest in a long line of women who have benefited from the St Ives IVF programme.
In an interview with the Lagos Times, the new mom narrated how her efforts to have a child have taken her to several specialist hospitals in Nigeria and India where she underwent numerous procedures without success.
She said: “This might be hard to believe but I am 67 years old and I have been married for over 39 years. I have done several IVF both in India and in Nigeria that failed. “At several points, I had said to myself: ‘So I will die without a child of my own?’ But I never gave up on God. I held on to the belief that at the appointed time, God will remember me. And my husband kept encouraging me.
“In 2018, I was directed to St. Ives Fertility Center by the Holy Spirit. I started the procedure with joy and I ended it with joy from above.”
Speaking further, Mrs Otunbusin advised other women who are encountering challenges with childbearing not to lose hope, urging them to remain positive and try all medical methods while also looking up to God for the fruit of the womb.
The medical team was led by the Head of IVF Unit, Dr Babatunde Okewale and other experts including Dr Kingsley Obodo, Dr Taofeek Ogunfunmilayo, Mr. Ozioma Chukwudi, and Fertility specialist nurses like Mary Obichie and Olusola Inameti.

Father we thank you, with God every thing is possible. I pray that other women looking for the fruit of the womb God will also help them in Jesus name using such good doctors and centres/ hospitals. Congratulations
Praise be to Almighty God the faithful Father. God bless your dedicated husband who stood by you. God bless your baby son. He shall become great. I pray that God will be merciful to me also. My husband left 28yrs ago to have children with another woman but I still have hope to remarry and have a child of my own. I'll not be put to shame because I put my trust in Him.
