Inflation, Rent And Weddings: Data Shows Why Nigerian Men Are Delaying Marriage

For many Nigerian men between 25 and 40, the question of marriage in 2026 is no longer just about love. It is about money, rent, and how far a salary can go in an economy battling high inflation.
A 2025 survey by NOI Polls found that 68 percent of single men in urban Nigeria said that the cost of bride price, engagement, and wedding was the biggest barrier to marriage. In Lagos and Abuja, a modest wedding now averages between N3.5m to N8m. That covers hall rental, catering, Aso Ebi, photography, and spraying money. In many communities, bride price and family demands can add another N500,000 to N2m.
Data from the National Bureau of Statistics NBS Q1 2026 puts Nigeria’s unemployment rate at 5.3 percent. However, youth unemployment for ages 15 to 34 remains at 9.7 percent. Underemployment is also high at 16.8 percent, meaning many people work fewer hours than they want.
With inflation still above 20 percent as of July 2026, many men say their monthly income barely covers transport, feeding, and rent, leaving little room to plan a wedding or support a family.
In Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, annual rent for a 1-bedroom flat now averages N800,000 to N2.5m according to property listings tracked in 2025. Most landlords demand 1 to 2 years rent upfront. For a man earning N250,000 monthly, that means saving 6 to 10 months salary just for housing before marriage.
Traditionally, a man is expected to provide accommodation, pay school fees, and handle most family expenses. A 2024 Afrobarometer report noted that 54 percent of Nigerian men aged 25 to 35 believe a man should be financially stable before marriage. Many are choosing to build savings first instead of rushing in.
More men are staying in school longer and focusing on career growth. NBS data shows tertiary enrollment increased by 12 percent between 2020 and 2025. Men in tech, remote jobs, and migration pipelines say they are prioritizing upskilling or relocation before settling down.
On Threads, X, and Instagram, conversations around financial independence, mental health, and avoiding debt have made many men rethink early marriage. Dating and relationship coaches in Lagos report that 41 percent of their male clients cite financial unpreparedness as the main reason for delay.
While Nigeria does not have a central marriage registry, church and mosque records in 6 major cities show a 17 percent drop in weddings between 2022 and 2025. Wedding vendors also confirm smaller guest lists and a rise in court weddings before bigger celebrations later.
Marriage is now viewed through the lens of affordability. Until wages rise, inflation drops, and housing becomes more accessible, many men say waiting is the practical choice.
Experts note this trend is not about avoiding responsibility. It is about economics. As one 32-year-old banker in Ikeja said, “I love her. But love does not pay rent or buy bags of rice”.
Under Nigerian law and social tradition, marriage remains valued. But in 2026, data shows that for many men, timing now depends on the economy.
