The retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Baba Adisa Bolanta, on Saturday in Ilorin, calls for total reformation of the Nigeria Police Force.

Bolanta made the call in his paper presentation at the Ilorin Chapter Day and Award Presentation of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS).

His paper presentation was entitled:”Geoscience practices in the face of current security challenges”.

He stated that the Nigeria Police is underfunded and have very little to act on, saying “to whom little is giving, nothing should be expected”.

According to him, the NPF doesn’t have the capacity to deal well with the present insecurity that the nation is going through.

His words: “Funding of security agencies is crucial in tackling insecurity in the country, as they are not properly equipped.

“With the necessary funding the police will be efficient and trained enough to face and deal with the present challenge the country is facing.”

Bolanta noted that without development there would be no security and that the two goes hand in hand.

“Physical security is absence of threat to life and apprehension. There are other variables attached to security such as food security, economic, environmental and social.

“The security of the whole nation is being threatened. There is no part of the country that is safe. Security and development is an interrelated factor in the process of nation building,” he said.

He observed that the environmental factor
is also to blame for insecurity, especially global warming, which has destroyed the environment and caused pastoral disturbance .

“There are influx of aliens miners from the Sahel subregion coming here because of joblessness,” he said.

He also opined that due to long time military rule the country endured, lots of structure have been weakened such as the police and custom, adding that these have become a weakened institutions.

The former AIG said about 35 percent of the youth in Nigeria are unemployed, and vulnerable to groups who mean to harm the peaceful coexistence of the country.

He, therefore, enjoined government to reduce youth unemployment and ensure massive youth engagement.

According to him, the mining sector is a prospective sector that can be harnessed for youth engagement and employment.

Speaking also, Mr Abdullahi AbdulGaniyu, the Managing Director of Kwara Harmony Holding observed that the society has the potential to solve some of the unemployment issues that has degenerated into insecurity in the country.

According to him, the overdependence in monoculture economy such as oil, does not augur well for the country.

He said the Kwara government had already began exploring other means of boosting the economy of the state, such as Agriculture and mining sector.

AbdulGaniyu also pledged the support of the state government for the society in ensuring that the teeming youth are gainfully employed through exploration of mineral resources.

Earlier in his welcoming address, Prof Olusola Ojo, the Chairman of the NMGS Ilorin Chapter said that the organisation is one of the oldest in the country inaugurated in 1962.

He stated that the society has the sole aim of strengthening the National body and impacting to the grassroots.

Ojo added that several elders and individuals have made contributions and personal sacrifices towards achieving the goals of NMGS.

He said the program is to honour these outstanding people who have done well to the society.

Some of the recipient of the awards includes Prof Silas Dada, Pro-Chancellor of the Anchor Universe and Prof Samuel Akande of the University of Ilorin.

Others includes Prof Rafiu Bale, Chartered Geoscientist and posthumous award also goes to late Prof Peter Olasheinde and others.
