Showmax’s latest original series, ‘Under the Influence’, has introduced fans to a colourful mix of characters, but one of the most unforgettable is Oye played by Isioma Okey-Nwosu.

Oye, a street-smart hustler with an instinct for finding opportunities —even in chaos— is the childhood friend and self-appointed manager of Dami, played by Iremide Adeoye.

Oye jumps in headfirst, determined to turn Dami’s viral fame into something bigger. What he lacks in structure, he makes up for in loyalty and sheer determination.

For Isioma, Oye’s deep bond with Dami in the series is what keeps their relationship strong. He describes Oye as the friend who helps Dami navigate the rough patches of his new reality, balancing out his lack of street smarts with a survival instinct.

“Oye is quite a loyal friend and he’s more streetwise compared to Dami, so he helps him manoeuvre in areas where I don’t think Dami would thrive,” Isioma explains.

Beyond his relentless energy, Oye also experiences unexpected personal growth. One of the most intriguing aspects of his character development comes from his bond with a mute woman. While Isioma doesn’t reveal too much, he hints that this relationship changes Oye in subtle but meaningful ways.

“Oye is always talking—cho cho cho, chon,” he jokes. “So it’s only right that his significant other is quiet.”

He adds that this connection forces Oye to slow down and communicate differently, showing a new side of his otherwise loud and impulsive nature.

For Isioma, the impact of ‘Under the Influence’ goes beyond just the characters. He believes the series gives viewers a raw and realistic look at the life of social media influencers, showing that viral fame is not always as glamorous as it seems.

“We all just see influencers online, but we don’t always see the trials and tribulations they go through,” he says. “The show gives you that insight from different perspectives.”

Despite playing a character deeply invested in the social media world, Isioma himself remains largely unfazed by it. When asked if he has ever done anything crazy for online validation, he simply shrugs it off. “To be honest, nothing,” he says. “I’m not one to be swayed by all that. If people don’t like me, they don’t like me. That’s just how I see it.”

Whether Oye is making deals, stirring up trouble, or learning unexpected lessons along the way, one thing is certain—Oye is a character that viewers won’t forget anytime soon.

Episodes 1-3 are now available to stream on Showmax, with new episodes released every Friday.
