A 40-year old bus driver, Adelowo Adekunle, who refused to refund N255,000 wrongly paid into his bank account in Lagos State, has told the Police that the money was his prayers answered by God and as such he will not refund the money.
P.M.EXPRESS reports the driver, Adekunle, was tracked and arrested by the Police intelligence team from Area M Command, Idimu, Lagos, after a woman, Mrs. Bright Okoye, wrongly transferred the money in his account.
The incident happened on 11th July, 2023, at Ikotun area of Lagos.
Mrs Okoye transferred the money from her WEMA account to Adekunle’s Sterling Bank account number 0075388459.
However, when Mrs. Okoye realized that she transferred the money into the wrong bank account, she reported to the Police, who in turn contacted the man, Adekunle, for details of the transaction.
When he was contacted and invited for peaceful resolution of the matter, he refused to come to the Police, which led the Police to trace him along Egbeda Road, eventually arrested and detained him at the station for interrogation over his conduct.
During interrogation, Adekunle reportedly told the Police that he actually thought that the money was prayers answered when he received the money. And he had spent it and he had no money to refund to the owner.
The Police found him culpable for stealing and consequently charged him before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court for the alleged offence.
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Supol Benedict Aigbokhan, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A.K. Dosumu, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment.
The matter was adjourned till 4th September, 2023, for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
