A 33-year old jilted man, Jide Afolayan Sunday, who poured acid on his estranged lover, Glory Sylvester Ita, for rejecting his marriage proposal has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Cross River State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that it was the judgment of the Calabar High Court, which found him guilty and convicted him for attempted murder over the brutal attack on Glory Sylvester Ita, which left her with severe burns and injuries.
The Presiding Judge, Justice Blessing Egwu, held that defendant, Sunday, planned to kill Ita when he invited her to a hotel on October 21, 2022, where he had a heated argument with her and then threw acid on her from the head to the abdomen, damaging one of her ears and breasts.
The Court also held that he tried to drown her in the pool, but she managed to escape.
The judge ordered Sunday to pay N10 million as compensation for Ita’s surgery and to serve his sentence at the Calabar Medium Security Custodial Centre.
He said that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that Sunday was guilty of the charge, which Sunday had denied as allegation and claimed that Ita was the one who poured acid on him, while the evidence showed otherwise.
The convict, Sunday, was arrested and charged to Court on 24th January, 2023. The relationship between Sunday and Ita lasted for nine months before he proposed to her but she refused.
The refusal angered Sunday, who invited her to a hotel and poured acid on her, which caused her serious body injury.
