The Lagos State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students have declared support for the governorship candidate of All Progressive Congress, APC, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, citing his performance in public service as reason for the endorsement.
Until recently, Sanwo-Olu was the Managing Director, Lagos State Property Development Commission (LSPDC) and at one time or the other, was Commissioner for Commerce & Industry, Budget & Planning and that of Establishment and Training.
NANS declared support for the APC candidate, an alumnus of University of Lagos, during the association’s celebration of International Students’ Day it held on Saturday.
Hundreds of students and their union leaders from the ten higher institutions in the state gathered at Maryland Comprehensive Secondary in OnigbongboLCDA for a walk to mark the annual event scheduled for every November 17 by United Nations.
From Maryland, the group on foot headed to Sanwo-Olu Campaign Organisation’s office at GRA Ikeja. They passed through Mobolaji Bank-Anthony Road and Remi Fani-Kayode Avenue singing Aluta songs and dancing to music blaring out from sound systems on the roof top of one of the buses in the procession led by the outgoing chairman of the association, Comrade Moses Samson Adewale, a.k.a SMS, and the incoming chairman, Qoyum Busari.
On reaching their destination, they were received by some chieftains of the party led by Director of Monitoring, Babajide Sanwo-Olu Independent Campaign Group, Hon. Abiodun Mafe, and the event turned largely political.
In their statement, the group said, “We as students have more than a passing interest in 2019 election, particularly as regards Lagos State. As progressives, we want square peg in square hole and have weighed each party governorship candidate in the balance. We came to the conclusion that the best man for the job is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress,Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, given his impressive scholarship and experience in public service,’’Comrade Adewale told their hosts.
The outgoing NANS chairman charged Sanwo-Olu if elected to constitute a student affairs committee that will be saddled with the responsibility of liaising between his would-be government and students, adding that this would foster healthy relationship between both.
Responding, Hon. Abiodun Mafe said that the APC governorship candidate is committed to the welfare and building capacity of youths of Lagos State.
The chief host added that top on Sanwo-olu’s agenda if elected is improving the state-owned educational institutions’ infrastructure and regular payment of bursary to students of Lagos extraction.
