Lagos Court Remands 46-Year-Old Man In Kirikiri Over Alleged Wife Battery In Isheri Oshun

A 46-year-old man, Ibekwe Chigozie, has been remanded in the Correctional Center at Kirikiri Town over alleged battery on his wife in the Isheri Oshun area of Lagos State.

The defendant was arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba and presided over by Mrs. O. Kasunu.

He is facing a one-count charge bordering on assault occasioning bodily harm, which is punishable under Section 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

The charge, marked Charge No. …./2026, was filed by the Commissioner of Police as the complainant in the matter.

According to the charge sheet, the alleged incident occurred on August 10, 2026, at No. 32, Adegbami Street, Isheri Oshun, Lagos, within the Lagos Magisterial District.

The prosecutor, SP Phillip Ademigbuji, told the court that the defendant allegedly assaulted his wife by beating her with fist blows, which allegedly caused her bodily harm.

He said the matter was reported as a case of domestic violence and was subsequently transferred from the local division to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, for discreet investigation due to the nature of the offence.

The Investigating Police Officer is ASP Omono Ubhi, under the supervision of ACP Oluwatoyin Kazeem, of the Gender Unit, Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja.

When the charge was read to the defendant in court, his plea was taken and he pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The prosecutor, SP Phillip Ademigbuji, informed the court that the complainant was ready for trial and urged the court to ensure that the defendant does not interfere with the complainant while the case lasts.

Defence counsel, however, applied for bail on behalf of the defendant on liberal terms, assuring the court that he is a responsible family man with a fixed address and that he will not jump bail.

He further assured the court that the defendant will be available to stand his trial and will not interfere with the prosecution witnesses.

In her ruling, Magistrate Mrs. O. Kasunu granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government, adding that their residential addresses must be verified by the court.

She further ordered that the defendant be remanded in the Correctional Center at Kirikiri Town pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.

The matter was adjourned for mention.

The Lagos State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to tackling all forms of domestic and gender-based violence in the state and warned that offenders will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Command advised residents to report cases of domestic violence to the nearest police station or directly to the Gender Unit at the Command Headquarters, Ikeja, for prompt action.

It assured that all reports will be treated with utmost confidentiality and professionalism by the police.

It is important to note that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
