The Lagos State Government on Tuesday announced the adoption of new Environmental Ambassadors to Champion environmental sustainability as well as roll out various ecological awareness and Advocacy Campaigns across the state.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, made this announcement while receiving the top five winners of the Lagos Has Talent competition – Climate Edition – at the Ministry’s Alausa office, stating that their efforts would play a crucial role in achieving a sustainable environment through educational advocacy.

He recalled that the journey of Lagos Has Talent began in 2023 and was driven by the vision to amplify young voices in the climate space and gained significant visibility in February 2024 with the unveiling of social media personality Maryam Apaokagi, popularly known as Taooma, as the Youth Influencer for the Climate Youth Engagement.

He said the ambassadors’ awareness/sensitisation would focus on the ways to educate, imbibe positive attitudinal change and implement sustainable practices amongst the public, especially the youths, on ways to mitigate the impacts of climate change and the adoption of proper waste disposal.

According to him, “We are thrilled to have these passionate individuals join our environment team. I am sure your various campaigns through poetry, artworks, musical presentation, fashion accessories production and short film presentation help us create a more sustainable future for our state and generations to come”.

He listed the names of the ambassadors alongside their various presentations as Mr. Jesutomiwa Giwa (Artworks), Miss. Ayomide Amusa (production of fashion accessories), Miss. Anita Nwokoji (Spoken Words Poetry), Miss. Tiwalade Aderemi (Short Film presentation) and Mr. Adebayo Kolawole (Musical presentation).

He said the competition cannot be a one-off thing where the participants would just receive cash gifts, plaques and certificates, but they will be decorated as ambassadors to collaborate with the Ministry’s public affairs team in order to channel their efforts towards achieving the set environmental goals.

Wahab urged everyone to support the new environmental ambassadors and embrace more environmentally sustainable lifestyles while the ambassadors continue to lend their voices through their various talents.
