A 25-year-old woman, Christiana Eno-Essein, was on Friday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate Court for alleged conspiracy and theft of N17,000,000 in Isheri North GRA, Lagos State.
According to the charge sheet marked A/96/2026, the defendant appeared in court alongside one other suspect who is currently at large. The case was filed by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command.
The prosecution told the court that the alleged offence took place on August 4, 2026 at about 2:00pm at No 3, Farouq Abawabo Drive, Opic Estate, Isheri North GRA, within the Ikeja Magisterial District.
In Count 1, the police alleged that Eno-Essein and the other suspect conspired to commit stealing. The offence is said to be contrary to Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
In Count 2, the defendant was accused of stealing the sum of Seventeen Million Naira, property of one Bimbo Amedu. The prosecution stated that the alleged theft occurred on the same date, time and place as stated in Count 1.
The offence in Count 2 is said to be contrary to Section 280 and punishable under Section 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The charge sheet was signed and forwarded by the Divisional Police Officer, Isheri Police Station, Lagos. It also bears the endorsement of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Ogba, indicating DPP approval for prosecution.
Court records showed that the case was transferred from Isheri Police Station to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further processing before it was filed in court.
During proceedings, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge. The prosecutor, SP Philip Ademigbuji, asked the court to grant a date for hearing to enable the police to prove the allegations.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O. Kusanu, granted the defendant bail with two sureties. The court ordered that the sureties must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment, while their addresses are to be verified by the court.
Following the ruling, the matter was adjourned for mention. The defendant was remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending the perfection of her bail conditions.
The alleged victim, Bimbo Amedu, is listed in the charge as the owner of the N17m allegedly stolen. Police authorities said investigations into the role of the second suspect who is still at large are ongoing.
Legal observers note that if found guilty, the offences under Sections 411 and 287(7) of the Lagos State Criminal Law carry various terms of imprisonment upon conviction. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. Efforts to reach the defendant’s counsel were unsuccessful as of press time.
