The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a 26-year-old man, Micah Abraham, before an Ikeja Magistrate Court over alleged unlawful possession of a locally fabricated firearm and conspiracy.
According to the charge sheet processed through the Lagos Criminal Information Systems, LCIS, and approved by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, DPP, on August 23, 2026, the defendant was arrested on June 4, 2026, at about 10:00 AM near the 174 Battalion area in Ikorodu.
Police operatives from Command Special Squad II said that the suspect, Abraham, was apprehended during a targeted raid alongside other suspects who managed to escape and remain at large. During a search, officers allegedly recovered a fabricated firearm with one live cartridge in his possession.
The prosecution, led by SP Philip Ademigbuji, filed a two-count charge against the defendant:
Count I: Conspiracy to commit felony, specifically the unlawful possession of a fabricated firearm, contrary to and punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Count II: Unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, contrary to and punishable under Section 330(d) of the same law.
When the charges were read to him in court, Abraham pleaded not guilty to both counts.
SP Ademigbuji told the court that the DPP had reviewed the case file and granted legal advice for immediate prosecution. He urged the court to grant a hearing date to enable the Police to present witnesses and evidence to prove the allegations beyond reasonable doubt.
In her ruling, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O. Kusanu, granted the defendant bail on liberal terms. The conditions included the provision of two sureties who must show evidence of means of livelihood and proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government. The court also ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
Pending the perfection of his bail conditions, the magistrate ordered that Abraham be remanded in custody at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre. The case was adjourned to a later date for hearing.
Security analysts who spoke on the development noted that the location of the arrest — close to the 174 Battalion Military installation — underscored the renewed efforts by Lagos security agencies to tackle the proliferation of locally fabricated small arms in Ikorodu and other parts of the state. Ikorodu has in recent years been flagged as a hotspot for illegal weapons and cult-related activities.
A senior officer from Command Special Squad II confirmed that investigations are still ongoing to apprehend the other suspects who fled during the raid. He added that the Command remains committed to clamping down on illegal arms and reducing violent crime across Lagos.
Legal experts noted that if convicted on both counts, the defendant faces a substantial prison term under the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Police however, emphasized that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
