Lagos Residents Appeal for Support for President Tinubu’s Second Term Bid

Some residents of Lagos State have called on Nigerians across the six geographical regions to support President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election, saying they want him to consolidate on policies and projects started since 2023.

Residents who spoke with our correspondent in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos Island, Mainland, Badagry, Abule Egba and Ikorodu areas of Lagos said they believe the administration has taken bold steps to reposition Nigeria’s economy and reduce reliance on foreign borrowing.

Residents’ assessment of the administration

The residents said that while the full impact of government policies is yet to reach all Nigerians, they believe President Tinubu has laid foundations that previous administrations since 1999 did not start, even during periods when international oil prices were higher.

They cited the removal of fuel subsidy as a major and difficult decision, and said that proceeds from the policy were used to increase workers’ salaries and boost monthly allocations to states and local governments.

They added that the increased allocations should enable subnational governments to deliver more services at the grassroots and support security operations.

“We are appealing to Nigerians not to allow politicians who have served in various offices since 1999 but could not lay a foundation to move Nigeria forward to deceive them in the coming elections,” one group of residents said.

They urged voters to hold governors and local government chairmen accountable for how the increased allocations are spent.

The residents also pointed to the creation of regional development commissions across the six geopolitical zones, with reported start-up capital released for regional projects, and the recent establishment of a National Tax Commission aimed at improving revenue and reducing borrowing.

Calls for continuity

According to the residents, four years is not enough to resolve problems accumulated since 1999, and a second term would give the administration more time to implement its agenda.

“President Tinubu met unresolved accumulated problems facing Nigerians since 1999 and he will not be able to solve all within four years in office since he is not a magician,” they stated.

Mr. Tunde Adebayo, a resident of Ibeju Lekki, said many Nigerians expected immediate solutions to longstanding challenges.

“I believed with the foundations Mr. President has laid since assuming office, Nigerians will not regret voting for him to win his second term in the January 2027 coming elections as he will do his best to solve critical problems before leaving office,” Adebayo stated.

Mr. Solomon Odijie, a resident of Ikorodu, said Nigerians should set aside tribal and religious considerations.

“Let us remove tribalism and sentiments, Tinubu is the best president Nigerians ever elected based on achievements spread across the six geographical regions within three and a half years in office compared to past leaders who ruled for years while oil was higher,” Odijie said.

He urged Nigerians to vote for Tinubu in 2027 to enable the administration to take the country to the next level.
