The Government of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode is scoring a good point in the sports development as it has just given approval for a long lasting structure for marathon race organisation in Lagos State.

A Lagos State Marathon Village will be set up at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere.

According to the Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Dr. Kweku Tandoh, the Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has given his consent to the setting up of the first-ever Marathon Village which will be the headquarters of all marathon activities in Lagos State. He said that with the successful organisation of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, which fourth edition will hold on 2 February next year, it has become imperative that a central structure is created to see how best the state would manage other marathon races that will be coming up very soon.

“Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has opened the door for other kinds of marathon races to be organised in Lagos. The plan is to have sector by sector marathon events. In December this year, we will be having the Media Marathon, we can also have the Bankers, Lawyers and other sectors marathon event. Very soon we will be having divisional marathon races such as Epe, Ikorodu, Ikeja Marathon events being organised regularly in Lagos now. The idea of the Marathon Village is to put in place organisational structure for these marathon events where there will be experts who will be in charge,” he said.

According to Tandoh, the Marathon Village is a Coordinating Office under the supervision of the Lagos State Sports Commission.

He further disclosed that for the 2019 edition of Access Bank Lagos City Marathon and going forward, a Marathon Council will be set up to henceforth oversee the organisation of the international event in the state,

“To us in Lagos State, marathon is not just a race but a culture and I’m so happy that with the commitment of the Governor, we are now seeing many Lagosians imbibing the culture of marathon in their daily life,” he said.
