Lagos Set To Reward Victorious Athletes At 2020 Maltina School Games

In a bid to reward excellent performance, the management of the Lagos State Sports Commission will hold a reception to appreciate the state’s athletes who won medals at the pilot edition of the 2020 Maltina School Games (Athletics) held in March, 2020.

Lagos State emerged victorious at the National Finals of the Games, which was held at the Yaba College of Technology, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos.Lagos topped the overall medal Table with 21 gold, 15 silver and 5 bronze medals.

The appreciation ceremony is slated to hold on Thursday. 17th Sept., 2020 at the Molade Okoya – Thomas Indoor Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium,Surulere by 10:00am.

The ceremony would have been held earlier, but the lockdown on all sporting activities in the state, occasioned by the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. All invitees to the ceremony have been advised that all Covid -19 safety protocols would be strictly adhered to during this event. \

At the Games, Abuja came second with 4 gold medals, 13 sliver, 10 bronze medals. Kano came third with 4 gold and 6 bronze medals, Anambra was in the fourth position with 3 gold, 4 sliver, 11 bronze.

Athlete of Lagos State, Ojo Joy was awarded the overall best student of the Games during the gala night put together by the organisers of the competition at Knot Event Centre, Tobi Lawal Road, Yaba. Joy, a student of Ijaiye Housing Secondary School was given a scholarship worth N1.5million and many other prizes.

It was celebration galore in Team Lagos Camp after the tournament as the success of the athletes at the Maltina School Games was attributed to the conscious effort of Lagos State Sports Commission to integrate sports and education as a key integral part of its School Sports Programme and the agenda of the present administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwolu (BOS).

Maltina School Games is a brand new School Sports Campaign designed to promote the development of school children through sports. The tournament was a series of Track and Field events in Junior and Senior Categories, Boys and Girls across Nigeria at the secondary school level.

The National Finals took place two weeks after the Preliminary District Finals/State Finals. Student athletes from Lagos, Anambra, Kano and Abuja came together to compete in the national finals.

The four states competed in the 100m sprints, 800m, 4x100m relay, long jump, high jump, javelin and shot put among others.

The closing ceremony was graced by notable figures such as the Director of Sports Development, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, Dr Ademola AreExecutive Chairman, Lagos State sport commission, Mr Sola Aiyepeku, the Director General of the Sports Commission, Mr Gafaar Oluwatoyin Permanent secretary/Tutor General of six education districts of Lagos State, ANCOPSS, Lagos State chapter and other dignitaries.
