Lagos State Government has urged homeowners in various state government-owned estates to embrace the tenets of sustainability and efficient maintenance of facilities within the estates.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, stated this at a stakeholders meeting with residents of Lagos State Government-owned housing estates in Lagos division of the State, held at Babatunde Raji Fashola Housing Estate, Iponri in Surulere Local Government Area.

The Permanent Secretary emphasised the importance of adopting global best practices in facility management by residents in conjunction with the appointed facility managers in their estates. He stressed that embracing sustainability is crucial for the growth and maintenance of government housing estates, to ensure they remain livable, safe, and maintain high yield estate value for homeowners and residents.

Engr. Toriola said the Ministry aims to create thriving housing estates that are not only beautiful but also sustainable and resilient, ensuring a better quality of life and an eco-friendly environment for residents.

He urged homeowners and facility managers to prioritise maintenance and adhere to physical planning laws and environmental regulations to prevent infrastructure decay.

Furthermore, he stated that sustainable housing estates are essential for the well-being of the residents and the environment.

Engr. Toriola said that to achieve sustainability, a monitoring and compliance unit has been established to enforce compliance with physical planning laws and other related regulations of Lagos State.

He advised the homeowners to pay their estate dues, which include service charges, Insurance premiums, and other agreed-upon dues when due to support estate sustainability.

It must be noted that the present administration has been working assiduously to increase housing stock through several initiatives including completing ongoing state-funded housing projects, embarking on worthwhile partnerships and Joint Venture housing projects that will deliver more homes before 2027.

Meanwhile, the Ministry is engaging agencies of government like Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Health Management Agency (Ilera Eko), LASACO Assurance, Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and others who made value-added presentations on sustainability and maintenance of estates.

The meeting was attended by representatives of Abraham Adesanya Housing Estate, Ajah, Oba Adeyinka Oyekan Housing Estate, Lekki, LagosHOMS Surulere and host estate Babatunde Raji Fashola.
