Lagos Unveils Sports Activities For Year 2021

The Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Sola Aiyepeku, has unveiled sporting activities for the Year 2021 Calendar.

Speaking at an interactive session with Sports journalists, on Tuesday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, the Chairman stated that in line with COVID-19 protocols, the State Government planned to introduce a Summer Camp where talented individuals will be trained and nurtured.

Aiyepeku, who joined the Interactive Session via Zoom, added that other platforms will also be created where local talents can be discovered, stressing that a comprehensive sports development plan is being designed towards reintegrating sports back into the School Curriculum and international partnerships as well as the introduction of a Statewide youth engagement sports platform through the Lagos Community Games.

He further stated that although the COVID-19 pandemic dealt a big blow to sporting programmes in Lagos State in the Year 2020, just as it did with other sectors, the Sports Commission is looking forward to hosting more activities in Y2021 in line with all safety rules and regulations.

According to him, annual competitions and events such as the Lagos Marathon, Lagos Classics, sports competitions organised by statutory Associations are lined up to hold in Y2021 if COVID-19 permits, while the Team Lagos is also scheduled to participate in the National Sports Festival to be hosted by Edo State, outlining other events such as the Grassroots Community Sports Development programme, Girl-Child programme and the Disabled Games.

In his contribution, the Director-General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Oluwatoyin Gafaar disclosed that the State has been supporting many athletes to enhance their potentials, such as a former Lagos Athlete, Anita Taviore, who recently travelled to the United States of America after securing an Education and Sports Scholarship.

While emphasising that all arrangements have been concluded to ensure that ‘Team Lagos’Athletes train adequately for the forthcoming National Sports Festival in Edo State, Gafaar revealed that sports community development programmes will hold from March through October 2021 with every community across the State being involved.
