Lagos Warns Against Roadside Car Spotting, Describes Act As ‘Nuisance, Breach Of Privacy’

The Lagos State Government has warned car-spotting enthusiasts to stay off public roads, describing the practice as a nuisance and a breach of privacy.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, issued the warning on Monday in a social media statement.

Wahab said the government would not allow the activity to disrupt traffic or infringe on people’s privacy while enthusiasts are free to pursue their hobby, but not in ways that obstruct road users.

“You can do your car spotting without constituting a nuisance or obstructing the road in any way,” the Commissioner stated, adding “You are welcome to visit car lots and engage in your car-spotting activities there. However, staying on the road for this purpose will not be allowed in any way.”

According to Wahab, the directive is aimed at two main concerns: road safety and personal privacy.

He explained that gathering on roads to photograph or record vehicles creates obstruction and inconvenience for other motorists and pedestrians.

“Apart from being a nuisance, it is also a breach of privacy and will not be tolerated by the State Government,” Wahab added.

Car spotting involves enthusiasts observing, photographing, or recording distinctive and high-end vehicles in public spaces.

The hobby has gained popularity in Lagos in recent years, especially around areas known for luxury vehicles and events.

The commissioner stressed that the government is not banning the activity itself.

“While the state is not opposed to the activity, using public roads in a manner that causes obstruction, nuisance or privacy concerns will not be permitted,” he said.

Wahab urged car-spotting enthusiasts to understand the government’s position and to conduct their activities in designated or appropriate locations such as car lots, dealerships, and auto shows, without interfering with public roads.

He noted that enforcing the restriction will help keep roads free, reduce distractions for drivers, and protect the privacy of vehicle owners and other road users.

The Lagos State Government said it will continue to monitor public spaces to ensure compliance with traffic and environmental laws.
