Leadership With Human Face Brings Desired Results – Engr. Musa Kida

Chairman of the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, has revealed his plans to make the company, stronger and more productive. 

Speaking at a leadership panel session at the just concluded Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Kida stated
that the NNPCL, is now commercially oriented and with the new drive to become a stronger force in the very competitive energy world.

The renowned oil and gas expert, was quick to enumerate that his leadership styles are hinged on collaboration participation, team work and personal responsibility, which are some key lessons drawn from his days as a former national basketball player.

“Everybody has a job and there is therefore, a need to collaborate in a way that all function optimally. My leadership style is very collaborative, but everybody must also be accountable. If you shoot and miss, you have to own it,” he said.

The NNPCL Chairman stated that the company’s ongoing ‘Fit for the Future’ initiative, was designed to pitch its operations against global standards and identify areas for improvement.

He disclosed that towards achieving its set targets, the company brought on board experienced industry professionals placed them into leadership roles, even as it also set up a strong governance frameworks to enhance trust and transparency.

“We’ve put in place processes, procedures, and governance structures that make staff understand that we are seeking the best from them, in an honest and transparent way. The greatest asset of the company, is its people. If you treat them well, they will give you the desired results.”

He went ahead to admonish leaders on the need to lead with humility and respect, and treating their subordinates the same way,  they would want to be treated.

“Treat everybody like a human being. Respect them, make them accountable, and always walk the talk,” he advised.

Energy experts have become enthusiastic about the future fortunes of the Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, through the achievements and experience of the current leadership of the board of the NNPCL.
