Lighting Up A Darkened World

DR SEGUN TREMENDOUS OSHINAGA

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Matthew 5:16

A boy once asked his daddy, “How tall am I?” His father thought he was about four and one half feet. “And how tall was Jesus?” the boy asked. His father thought the Lord had probably been over five feet or possibly six feet tall. “Wow!” the boy shouted. “Then if Jesus is in me, He’ll stick out!” That is the truth. Jesus should be sticking out of all of us.

When we truly begin to shine, we touch lives and impact them with the love, compassion and grace of our Lord. We treat them with dignity and empower them every way we can. The bottom line is always God getting the glory. Our conduct must always stand this one test – does it give God glory? Does it honour and bless the name of our God? If it doesn’t, it does not matter who is involved or the benefits we get from it, we shouldn’t do it.

For the believer, what pleases God is the gold standard. Whether at work, home or church, pleasing and honouring God is the focal point. It is the principle that must underpin our every activity and interaction. Not what gives us immediate satisfaction or gain but what would Jesus want or do. That is the essence of having Christ as our Lord. Many of us know him as our savior. We have accepted him as Saviour and received his forgiveness for all of our sins. That is elementary. Real spiritual growth begins when we submit to the Lordship and leadership of Jesus.

When we accept the Lordship of Jesus Christ, he becomes our master. He rules entirely in our affairs. Throughout all of life’s situations, his word is law; his instructions are mandatory and we live entirely at his beck and call. Others can see that we not in charge but he is. Because He is in charge, we are able to represent his character, thoughts and life to the world.

“Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.”
Ephesians 5:10

One of the crucial responsibilities of being the light is to represent the Lord’s standard to the world. We become God’s ‘showcases’ to the world. God wants to ‘show us off’ to the world. He wants our lives to be such that he can point to us and tell the world, ‘If you see him, you have seen me.’ I like the NIV rendering of Ephesians 5:10 – “and find out what pleases the Lord.” When we know and do what pleases the Lord, he can use us as ‘magnets’ for the kingdom. Ultimately, God wants to use us as ‘advertisers’ of his kingdom. When we shine as light, the quality of our lives, our morality and compassion will be much higher than the world and many will want to be like us.
