Maid, 17, Sent To Prison For Flogging 6-Month Baby With Belt

A 17-year old house maid, Miss Kofoworola Akinboro, has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly maltreating a 6-month old baby in her care by flogging the baby with a belt and inflicting injury on his body.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Babami Street, Ebute Metta area of Lagos, where Miss Akinboro was engaged as a house maid.
The little baby, Kolawole Olufemi, suffered his fate after his mother left him in the care of the maid and went to work.
The Police did not disclose what the baby or the mother did to her, which made her to inflict such injuries on his body despite the fact that the victim is still a baby.
The Police alleged that the maid had on the day the incident happened in the afternoon, at about 2.00pm, allegedly used the belt to flog the baby mercilessly and he sustained injury on his head and other parts of his body.
When the victim’s parents came back and saw what happened to their baby, they went to Iponri Police Division and reported the matter. The maid was arrested and detained at the station for interrogation over her alleged conduct on the baby. And while being interrogated, she reportedly admitted to have used the belt on the little boy.
The Police found her culpable and consequently charged her before the Ebute Metta Magistrate Court for the alleged offence, which attracts several years of imprisonment.
She pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Supol Paul Ogorji, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since she pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that she actually committed the alleged offence.
The Court granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and addresses verified by the Court.
She was remanded in custody at the correctional centre pending when she will perfect her bail conditions while the matter was adjourned for mention.
