Police operatives from the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Yaba, have arrested a 28-year old man, Benjamin Best Nnanyelugo, for allegedly stabbing a lady, Miss Augusta Oseodion Omuwabhagbe, during a squabble and she died in the process.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on the 14th July, 2023, at Abiola Apooyin Street, Oral Estate, Ikota area of Lagos.
According to the Police, the suspect had a disagreement with the deceased, which led to exchange of words. In the process, the suspect was said to have used a knife to stab her several times on her abdomen.
She fell down and was said to have bled profusely before she was rushed to an undisclosed hospital, where the Doctor on duty confirmed her dead and the corpse was deposited at mortuary for autopsy report.
The suspect fled having realized that he had killed the deceased while the matter
was reported to the Police in the area. The Police later arrested and transferred him to the SCID at Yaba for further investigation.
The Police found him culpable for murder after rounds of interrogation under the criminal law of the State.
The charge read:
“That you, Benjamin Best Nnanyelugo “m” on the 14th July, 2023, at 24A Abiola Apooyin Street, Oral Estate, Ikota, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did kill late Miss Augusta Oseodion Omuwabhagbe by stabbing her multiple times on her abdomen and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 222 and punishable under Section 223 of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
The Court did not take his plea following a motion moved by the prosecutor,  Emmanuel Eze, Esq asking the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for legal advice because of the nature of the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. E Kubeinje, ordered his remand in custody at the correctional center pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP for advice.
The matter was adjourned for mention for the report of the DPP’s advice to be available, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
