KINGSLEY EBERE

A 28-year old man, Yusuf Oche, has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly beating up a Police man attached to LASTMA, Inspector Emegha Joshua, while performing his lawful duty on the highway.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened in the morning at Costain roundabout in Lagos.

According to the Police, the suspect had an altercation with the victim, which led to hot exchange of words. And in the process, the suspect grabbed the complainant, gave him fist blows on his face and injured him in the process.

However, he was later arrested by the Police operatives from Iponri Division and detained at the station for interrogation over his alleged conduct against the victim.

After interrogation, the Police found him culpable and charged him before the Ebute Metta Magistrate Court for the alleged offence.

The charges read:

COUNT I:”That you, Yusuf Oche ‘m’ on the 30th day of January, 2025 at about 11:30am at Costain Roundabout in the Lagos Magisterial District, did assault one Inspector Emegha Joshua ‘m’ of Nigerian Police Force attached to Lagos State Management Authority ‘LASTMA’ while performing his lawful duty by giving him fist blow on his face and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 174 of the criminal laws of Lagos State Nigeria 2015.”

COUNT II:”That you, Yusuf Oche ‘m’ on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by dragging with a Police officer and LASTMA officers while on uniform performing their lawful duty and inciting members of the public to join in the fight and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 168(D) of the criminal laws of Lagos State Nigeria 2015.”

However, he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Inspector Francisca Job, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.

The Presiding Magistrate, Adedayo Tella, granted him bail with two sureties, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.

The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
