A 29-year-old man was on Tuesday arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court sitting in Ikeja over alleged conspiracy and unlawful possession of a firearm. The legal proceeding marked the beginning of a formal judicial review into security operations conducted in the mainland area of the state.
The defendant, identified as Okereke Kosiko, appeared before Magistrate Mrs. O. Kusanu to face a two-count charge preferred against him by the Police. The prosecution team presented the initial evidence gathered during preliminary operational interventions.
The prosecutor, SP Phillip Ademigbuji, told the court that Kosiko and others, who are currently at large, committed the alleged offences on May 17, 2026. The incident reportedly took place at approximately 06:00 hrs around the Fitness Expo Place Way, located in the Ago Okota area of Lagos State.
Providing further details on the first count, SP Ademigbuji alleged that the defendant conspired with fleeing accomplices to commit the offence of unlawful possession of a firearm. According to the prosecution, this act stands contrary to and is punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
On the second count, the prosecutor alleged that Kosiko was found in possession of a cut-to-size locally-made pistol loaded with one live cartridge. The court heard that the defendant could not give a satisfactory or lawful account of how he came to possess the weapon when questioned by security operatives during the field operation. This particular offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 330(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The prosecutor formally informed the court that wider investigations into the matter are actively ongoing. He added that the case file had been duplicated and forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), under the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, for comprehensive legal advice.
Following the submissions from the prosecution, the Presiding Magistrate, Kusanu, ordered that the defendant be remanded in custody at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre. The remand order will remain in effect pending the outcome of the official advice from the DPP, which is required to determine the appropriate judicial venue and jurisdiction for a full trial.
The matter was subsequently adjourned to a later date for mention, awaiting the processing of the legal documentation.
Section 330 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State explicitly prohibits the unauthorized possession of firearms and ammunition, while Section 411 criminalizes any form of conspiracy to commit crimes under state law. Local security experts note that the Lagos State Police Command has recently intensified targeted raids and stop-and-search operations across Ago Okota and adjacent communities to curb the circulation of illegal arms.
The Lagos State Police Command reaffirmed that the arrest forms part of its broader tactical enforcement strategies aimed at suppressing violent activities and ensuring public safety. Under Nigerian jurisprudence, the defendant maintains a strict presumption of innocence until a court of competent jurisdiction proves otherwise through an official trial.
