MICHAEL AKINOLA

A LASTMA Officer, Eniola Akintunde, got his mouth seriously damaged after he was hit with a heavy wood over suspicion that he wanted to collect bribe from a driver, who he accosted on the highway over a traffic offence in Lagos State.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the officer was badly injured on the mouth, bled profusely and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment, which may involve stitching his mouth so that he will be able to eat.

The culprit, Kehinde Alaka, has been arrested for his conduct on the officer, Akintunde, who was performing his lawful duty.

The incident happened on 18th June, 2022, at Iju Motor Park, Agege area of Lagos, where Akintunde went to perform his official duty of controlling traffic on the highway.

Trouble was said to have started after Akintunde stopped the driver of the Toyota Sienna with registration number, LSR 880 CV and was about to take him to their office after negotiations failed on settlement on the road.

The driver, Alaka, was said to have appeared thereafter with a short wood and hit the officer on the mouth and there was profuse bleeding before he was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

The matter was reported to the Police at Pen-Cinema Division, who then trailed and eventually arrested the driver. He then detained at the station for interrogation over his conduct.

During interrogation, the Police discovered that there was nothing immediately connecting his action with the conduct of the LASTMA officer but it was as a result of the hatred he had nursed against the LASTMA Officers over the years.

He was subsequently charged before the Ogba Magistrates Court for assault and occasional harm.
When he was arraigned, he pleaded not guilty before the Court.

The prosecutor, Inspector Dada Waisu, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O.O. Fagbohun, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment.

He was remanded in the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions while the matter was adjourned on 6th July, 2022, for mention.
