A 39-year old man, one Ikechukwu Okafor, has been arrested in Lagos after he was allegedly caught sexually assaulting a 13 months old neighbour’s baby girl.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at 30 Rashidi Babatunde Street in Okokomaiko area of Lagos where they reside.
The suspect, Mr. Okafor, was said to have returned from work on 15th March, 2019 at about 8pm and carried the baby to his apartment where he removed her pant and reportedly defiled her on his bed.
However, while he was still in the act, the mother of the baby who was looking for her traced her to Okafor’s apartment. She was said to have entered the room and discovered that the little girl’s pant was removed; she then checked her private part only to discover that it was tempered with. She raised alarm which attracted other neighbours and the matter was reported to the police in the area.
Okafor was arrested and later transferred to the Gender Section of the Police Command in Ikeja.
Afrer interrogation, the police found him culpable and charged before Ogba Magistrates Court for defilement.
When he was arraigned, the prosecutor, Inspector Christopher John, informed the court that the offence was a capital one and would need the DPP’s advice.
Thus, the Court did not take his plea and ordered him to be remanded in prison custody without an option of bail.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. Peter Nwaka, directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send to the DPP for advice.
The matter was adjourned till 24th April, 2019 for report of the DPP to be ready.
Some of the residents who heard what happened were surprised and wondered the aim of the defendant to have engaged the baby in such act. Some believed it was for other hidden purposes than deriving sexual satisfaction from the victim.
