A 40-year old man, Isiyaku Awalu, has been arrested over the death of his rival, Ayomide Olusanya, after allegedly using a poisonous dagger to stab him to death during a public fight in Lagos State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Ojuirin railway in Oko Oba area of Lagos.
According to Police sources, the suspect, Awalu and the late Olusanya had a disagreement, which led to public fight. It was in the course of the fight that Awalu brought the dagger and stabbed him on his lap. He was said to have bled profusely and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital, where he eventually died due to the effect of the poisonous dagger as the residents claimed that the victim cannot survive once the dagger was used on him.
The alleged death was reported to the Police at Oko Oba Division and Awalu was arrested. He was later transferred to the SCID, Yaba, for further investigation over the alleged murder.
After thorough interrogation, the Police found him culpable and subsequently charged him before the Yaba Magistrates Court for murder, which attracts several years of imprisonment or life imprisonment if he is tried and found guilty.
However, when he was arraigned, the Court did not take his plea following a motion moved by the prosecutor,  Supol Thomas Nurudeen, asking the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for advice.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. P.E. Nwaka, ordered his remand in the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when the DPP’s report will be ready and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP.
The matter was adjourned pending the outcome of DPP’s advice, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
