A 41-year old man, Kingsley Opara, has landed in trouble in Lagos State for deceiving a single mother, Adeniyi Tayo, by promising to get married to her only for the woman to discover later that he was married with two children.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the angry Tayo sent Kingsley away from her house and handed him over to the Police for prosecution for allegedly stealing her phone worth N1.3m.
The incident happened at Dapo Sokeire Street, Isolo area of Lagos, where Tayo resides.
The suspect, Kingsley, who is from Owerri in Imo State, had lied to Tayo that he was still single and promised to get married to her as she had also wanted to get a husband before they met.
According to Kingsley, he was jobless  and had accommodation problem when he met Tayo. And for him to survive, he promised to get married to her. She then brought him into her house and they started living together pending when he will properly get married to her.
He admitted that he did not tell Tayo that he was married with children by the time they met. So when she later realized that he was already married with children, it angered her and she sent him away.
She also discovered that Kingsley allegedly stole her phone and reported the alleged theft to the Police at Aswani Division. The Police subsequently arrested Kingsley and detained him for interrogation.
During interrogation, Kingsley denied the allegation but Tayo asked the Police to charge the matter to Court. And he was subsequently charged before the Isolo Magistrate Court for stealing.
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Supol Peter Nwogwugwu, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O. Kusanu, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment.
The matter was adjourned till 17th October, 2023, for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
