A 46-year old man, Sulemon Amodu, has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly swindling a man, Michael Adekunle, of the sum of N17m under false pretence.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 8th October, 2024, in Lagos.
According to the Police, the suspect collected the money from the complainant for an undisclosed business and after the complainant gave him the money, he bolted away and disconnected every communication he had with him.
The matter was reported to the Police at Isokoko Division. The Police operatives moved into action, eventually arrested and detained the suspect at the station for interrogation over his alleged conduct.
While being interrogated, the suspect admitted to have collected the money and had spent it, as such had no money to refund the complainant.
The Police found him culpable and charged him before the Ogba Magistrate Court for the alleged offence which attracts several years of imprisonment.
The charges read:
COUNT I:- “That you, Sulemon Amodu ‘m’ on the 8th October, 2024 at about 1400hrs at Ikeja Lagos State in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did commit felony to wit obtaining the sum of Seventeen Million Naira (N17,000,000.00) under false pretense and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 314 (1) (3) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
COUNT II:-“That you, Sulemon Amodu ‘m’ on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did steal the sum of Seventeen Million Naira (N17,000,000.00) property of one Michael Adekunle ‘m’ and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
However, he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor,,Supol Josephine Ihkayere, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.A. Owolabi, granted him bail with two sureties, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
