The arrest of a 52-year-old man, Hamisu Mamuda, while attempting to smuggle 12 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp to sell at Kurmawa Correctional Centre in Kano State, may have exposed what has been going on in various prisons across the States.
P.M.EXPRESS reports as was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who confirmed that the suspect was in custody undergoing interrogation over his alleged attempt to smuggle in the drugs with intent to sell it to inmates.
“On 27th April 2024, personnel of the Nigeria Correctional Service attached to Kurmawa Correctional Centre arrested one Hamisu Mamuda, ‘m’, aged 52 years of Samegu Quarters, Kumbotso LGA, Kano State in possession of twelve (12) Nylon bags of dried Leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp wrapped in his jacket in an attempt to smuggle it into Kurmawa Correctional Centre with intent to sell it to inmates.”
“The suspect also confessed to the crime and is currently cooling his feet at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for discreet investigation. At the completion of investigation the suspect will be charged to court.”
What the suspect did was not new within the correctional centers across the States in Nigeria but what surprised many was what went wrong for the Police to have gone to the centre to arrest the suspect because it was assumed that the drug dealers in the prisons have strong collaboration with the prison officials as was disclosed by an ex-imates.
