A 54-year old man, Eseni Chima, has been arrested and charged in Ebonyi State for allegedly killing his wife, Ugochukwu Chima, by striking her to death with iron rod.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the man, Eseni, has been charged before an Abakaliki Magistrate Court for murder under the Criminal Laws of the State.
The incident happened on 4th September, 2024, at No. 60 Ogbaga Road, Kpirikpiri, Abakaliki Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, where they reside.
The Presiding Magistrate, Chinedu Agama, did not take Chima’s plea for want of jurisdiction and ordered the defendant to be remanded in custody at the correctional center pending the outcome of the DPP’S advice.
The Court directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
The matter was adjourned till 31st December, 2024, for report of the DPP’s advice to be ready, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
The Prosecutor, Emmanuel, had earlier told the Court that the defendant allegedly committed the offence by causing the death of the deceased by beating her with iron rod.
He told the Court that the defendant had used the iron rod to beat the deceased until she died before he stopped, an offence punishable under Section 319 (1) of the criminal code law, cap 33, Vol 1, laws of Ebonyi, 2009.
The defence counsel, Daniel Onuoha, appealed for his client’s bail but it was rejected because the Court lacked jurisdiction over the matter and the defendant was remanded accordingly.
