A 56-year-old man, Moruf Olayiwola, has landed in trouble for allegedly swindling a traditional ruler in the state, Oba Kehinde Teniola, the Alayetoro of Ayetoro Ijesa, to the tune of N. 6m.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the suspect, Olayiwola, has been arrested.
According to the Police, the suspect allegedly obtained one Toyota Lycon from the monarch and promised to pay him N600, 000 but failed to do so, hence he was arrested and charged before the Court.
The Police prosecutor, Inspector Rasaq Olayiwola, informed Chief Magistrate’s Court in Osogbo, where Olayiwola was arraigned, that the defendant in a bid to defraud Oba Teniola, issued him a dude cheque and when it was presented at the bank, it was dishonoured due insufficient funds in the account.
Part of the charge read: “That you Moruf Olayiwola on the same date, time at Legacy Junction, Agunbelewo Osogbo in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did cheat one Oba Teniola Kehinde when you collected one Toyota Lycon from him through his sales representative, one Olatunji Abiodun with a pretence to balance him with the sum of N600,000 and failed to do so and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.
“That you Moruf Olayiwola in January 2018, same time and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District did issue a dude cheque of Heritage Bank Plc of N200, 000 to one Oba Teniola Kehinde knowing fully your representation is false and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 471 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.”
He pleaded not guilty.
There was no legal representation for him. The prosecutor then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Chief Magistrate, Olusola Aluko, adjourned the matter for consideration of the defendant’s bail and ordered his remand in Ilesa Correctional Centre pending when his bail will be considered.
