KINGSLEY EBERE

A 61-year-old old man, Moses Nweze, has been charged in Ebonyi State for allegedly using an axe to kill his elder brother’s wife, Mrs. Mary Nwomege, while she was cooking.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the dastardly incident happened on 24th February, 2024, at Edukwu Ndegazu in Ikwo Local Government Area of the State, where they reside.

The suspect, Moses, has been arrested and consequently charged before the Abakaliki Magistrate Court on Monday for the alleged murder, which attracts several years of imprisonment or life imprisonment.

During the arraignment, the Police prosecutor, Eze Chinagorom, told the Court that the defendant, Moses, used an axe to strike Mrs. Nwomege on the head from behind while she was cooking.

Part of the charge read: “That you, Moses Nweze ‘m’, on February 24, 2024, at Edukwu Ndegazu in Ikwo Local Government Area within the jurisdiction of the Honourable Court, unlawfully caused the death of one Mary Nwomege “f” by hitting her with an iron axe”.

The Police alleged that Moses committed an offence punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Law Cap 33 Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria 2009.

The Presiding Magistrate, Lilian Ogodo,  after the charge was read to him, denied him bail and stated that the Court lacked jurisdiction to handle the matter.

Consequently, she ordered Moses remanded in custody at the Abakaliki Correctional Service and directed that the case file be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice for further action.

The matter may likely be transferred to the High Court if the DPP’s report finds the defendant culpable and recommends his trial for the alleged murder.

The victim’s daughter, Chinasa Nwomege, recounted the harrowing incident and insisted that she wants justice in the matter as she narrated what happened that led to the death of her mother.

“I was inside the house when suddenly I heard my mother’s distressed breathing. I rushed out to find my uncle, Moses, striking my mother on the head with an axe. I raised an alarm, and neighbours came to help us rush my mother to the hospital.”

However, before she was taken to an undisclosed hospital, she was already dead and Doctors merely confirmed her dead and her corpse was deposited at mortuary for autopsy report.
