A rescued young man has expressed his anger in Lagos State after he was stopped moments before jumping into the lagoon through the Third Mainland Bridge near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront in an attempted suicide.
According to the Police, the yet to be named man, was on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, rescued by members of the Agbekoya Society of Nigeria led by its President General, Aare Kamorudeen Okikiola, while they were returning from a high-level courtesy visit to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Adegoke Fayoade,at the Zone 2 Command headquarters in Onikan, Lagos.
The visit had been part of the society’s renewed effort to deepen collaboration with the Nigeria Police in strengthening community policing across Yorubaland.
While they were returning, the Agbekoya convoy was heading towards the mainland when members noticed a lone man acting erratically near the edge of the bridge. Alarmed by his behaviour, Aare Okikiola immediately ordered the convoy to stop. In a coordinated and swift response, members of the delegation approached the man and managed to restrain him just as he was about to leap into the lagoon.
“We had just concluded a productive meeting with the AIG when this happened,” said Aare Kamorudeen, visibly emotional. “God used us today.
This is the essence of our mission to protect lives, restore hope, and work hand-in-hand with security agencies for a safer society.”
The man, believed to be in his early thirties, was safely handed over to the Berger Pin-down unit of the Bariga Police Division. He has since been taken for medical and psychological evaluation to receive the care and support he urgently needs.
The Agbekoya Society’s swift and humane response has drawn widespread praise on social media and from civil society organizations. Many commended the group’s timely intervention and highlighted the importance of fostering stronger partnerships between cultural institutions and official law enforcement agencies.
Meanwhile, the Police has began to interogate the man to ascertain what could have made him to attempt to commit suicide as well his mental status.
According to a Police source, the man was still angry over his rescue because he was said to have preferred to die and not to be alive with his condition.
