A 20-year old man Emmanuel Akintoye has burgled a church, carted away their generating set and bolted away in Lagos, Nigeria.
The incident happened at a Cherubim and Seraphim church located at Balogun street in Igando, suburbs of Lagos.
According to police, Akintoye conspired with others at large and burgled the church and ransacked the place looking for money. When he did not find any money, he stole a Honda Generator and attempted to run away.
However, while escaping, he was apprehended by the residents who handed him over to the police at Igando division.
He reportedly confessed and was charged before Isolo Magistrate’s court with conspiracy, breaking into a religious place and stealing generator under the Criminal Code.
When he was initially arraigned, he pleaded guilty.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs A.K. Shonubi ordered his remand to prison and adjourned the matter on Friday for facts and sentence.
However, when the charge was read to him for the prosecutor, Mr A.U. Ojei to present the facts before the court, he changed his plea to not guilty.
The court then granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He was remanded in prison pending when he will perfect his bail condition.
The matter was adjourned till 25 November 2016 for trial.
