CYRIACUS IZUEKWE

A police sergeant, Mr. Duru Oguzie, had his left hand almost cut off when he went after suspected armed robbers at night in Lagos, one of the suspects laid ambush and used a cutlass to inflict injury on him.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Iyana Itire area of Lagos where Oguzie and other members of the police team were on routine checks for criminal elements.

He is now presently in an undisclosed hospital undergoing both surgery and treatment.
The incident happened after the police team stopped six suspects who were inside a tricycle late in the evening under reasonable suspicion of their movement.
It was gathered that when the police team stopped them, the suspects rushed out from the tricycle, started running with their arms and Oguzie pursued them. As he pursued them, one of the suspects, Mr. Samsideen Rafiu, hid somewhere. From where he hid, Rafiu then brought out the cutlass he had with him, inflicted serious injury on his hand and attempted to escape.

The police officer, Mr. Oguzie, still held the suspect while blood gushed from his hand before other members of the police team came. They arrested Rafiu and rushed Oguzie to an undisclosed hospital.

Mr. Rafiu was detained at the Itire Police Station before he was charged to Isolo Magistrates court for assault and grievous harm on the police officer.
He pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Mr. Oje Uagbale did not oppose his bail condition but informed the court that the victim was still in the hospital because of the injury he sustained.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Teluwo granted Rafiu bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He was remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail condition.
