A man, Bello Jamiu, has landed in trouble in Oyo State after he forcefully sexually engaged a 56-year old woman, who was bedridden with stroke and he was caught in the alleged dastardly act.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Okikiade, Ajala area, Babanla, Ibadan, Oyo State, where they reside.
The suspect, Jamiu, has been arrested and charged before the Court for the alleged statutory rape and remanded in custody at Agodi Correctional Centre.
The Prosecution Counsel, Femi Oluwadare, told the Court that Jamiu had on 14th March, 2023, at about 4:00pm, gone inside the apartment where the woman was on her sick bed and raped her.
He was alleged to have removed her clothes including her pants and had unlawful sexual intercourse with the woman without her consent despite her condition.
Having satisfied himself, he went away with the hope that the victim will not be able to identify him but she revealed what happened.
The matter was reported to the Police. Jamiu was then arrested and detained at the station for interrogation over his alleged criminal conduct.
After thorough interrogation, the Police found him culpable and subsequently charged him before the Court for the alleged offence, which attracts several years of imprisonment if he is found guilty before Court.
The prosecutor, Oluwadare, told the Court that the alleged offence is contrary to Section 357 and punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The Presiding Chief Magistrate, E. A. Idowu, who did not take the defendant’s plea, ordered his remand in custody pending the legal advice from Oyo Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).
The Court also directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP for advice while the matter was adjourned till 16th May, 2023, for mention for the report of the DPP’s advice to be available, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
