A man, Okechukwu Uche, has landed in trouble in Lagos State after he disappointed a lady, Chidinma Innocent, went ahead to swindled her of the sum of N5m and bolted away with the money.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the suspect, Uche, has been arrested for fraud over his conduct against the victim, Chidinma.
The incident happened at Ikotun area of Lagos, where Uche met Chidinma and obtained the money from her under the false pretence of establishing an undisclosed business, which turned out to be a scam.
The Police did not disclose the nature of the business, which Uche and Chidinma transacted before she was defrauded, rather the Police alleged that in December 2021, Uche contacted Chidinma and obtained the money under the false of establishing the business.
She was said to have believed him and given him the money in question to do what they had agreed but he bolted away with the money.
Having waited for Uche for a long time to no avail, she became worried as he was said to have disconnected every communication both of them had. The lady, Chidinma, then went and reported the matter to the Police at Ikotun Division. Police operatives then trailed and eventually arrested Uche in 2022 and detained him for interrogation.
During interrogation, Uche was said to have admitted to have obtained the money from Chidinma. He confessed that he had spent the whole money and will not be able to pay her back.
The Police found him culpable and subsequently charged him before the Ejigbo Magistrates Court for the alleged offence.
He pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned.
The prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Njue, did not object to his being granted bail but asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A.K. Dosumu, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood.
The matter was adjourned while the defendant was remanded in Correctional Centre pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
