CYRIACUS IZUEKWE
A 28-year old man, Kingsley Richard, has been sentenced to four years imprisonment without an option of fine for attacking a lady, one Destiny Dominic, in Lagos and biting her in the process.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at 19 Osolo Way in Ajao Estate, Lagos, where the victim, Destiny, runs a boutique.
The police alleged that the convicted Richard invaded the victim’s boutique, picked some clothes and attempted to move away without paying for them. When Destiny confronted him, he grabbed her, attempted to strangle her and inflicted injuries on her face with several bites. The lady was said to have held him, raised alarm which attracted neighbours who held Richard and contacted the police.
He was arrested and taken to Ajao Police Division for interrogation while the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The motive behind his action was not known as the lady told the police that she did not know him before he invaded her shop and carried out the attack.
The police found Richard culpable and charged him before the Isolo Magistrates court for attempt to commit felony and assault on the victim.
He initially pleaded not guilty and was granted bail but when the trial commenced he changed his mind and pleaded guilty.
The prosecutor, Inspector Oje Uagbale, informed the court that since he had pleaded guilty in the middle of the trial, the court should sentence him accordingly to serve as deterrent to others who might try such in future.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. O.A. Teluwo, found him guilty as charged but he pleaded for leniency during allocutus before the court.
The court sentenced him to four years imprisonment with hard labour for the two count charges. However, the court ruled that the sentence will run concurrently which means Richard will spend two years in prison custody in Kirikiri, Lagos.
