A man, Kayode Ojo, who attempted to commit suicide inside the Police cell over detention has been charged before the Court and remanded in custody at the Correctional Centre over his alleged conduct in Ondo State.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the defendant,  Ojo, was charged before the Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Odigbo, Odigbo Local Government Area of the State for attempting to commit suicide inside the Police cell.

He was arrested by men of the State Police Command for allegedly committing an undisclosed crime and was detained inside the cell for interrogation, which he was said to have denied.

However, while Ojo was in the cell, he became so angry and attempted to take his own life by attempting to drink a poisonous liquid substance inside the cell. But the Policemen on duty discovered his plan, quickly rescued him and kept him in protective custody.

However, the Police found him culpable for the alleged suicide attempt and  arraigned him before the Court on one count charge of attempted suicide.

According to the Police prosecutor, Mr. James Usifo, the offence committed contravenes Section 327 of the Criminal Code Cap. 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

Usifo told the Court that the defendant committed an offence by attempting to kill himself by drinking a poisonous substance suspected to be a disinfectant in Police custody. He was said to have earlier been arrested for another crime and detained in a Police cell, where he attempted to kill himself.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.

Chief Magistrate, D. O. Ogunfuyi, in his ruling, remanded the defendant at the Okitipupa Correctional Centre and adjourned the case till 10th October, 2023, for facts and sentence.
